The Real Estate Council of Austin, Inc. (RECA) is a dynamic 501(c)(6) non-profit organization that serves as an organized advocacy group and professional networking forum for more than 1,700 commercial real estate professionals in Central Texas. RECA’s membership includes developers, builders, financial institutions, architects, engineers and anyone with a professional interest in commercial real estate.
RECA's mission is to advance civic leadership in support of responsible development and a livable Austin. RECA serves as an effective resource and advocate for the industry on issues including building regulations and permitting, affordability, transportation, the environment and any other issues that may impact the quality of life in Central Texas. Many of RECA’s members are small business owners and entrepreneurs who build our community’s favorite places including our churches, schools, restaurants, shops, gathering places and more.
Position/Expected Work Hours
This is a full-time position from Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and duties will require a flexible schedule and after-hours work as needed.
RECA seeks an accomplished advocacy professional with proven communications experience to work for an influential, member-based association. Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Advocacy and Outreach will help develop and coordinate programs to improve the effectiveness of RECA’s Advocacy with City, County and State Officials and assist in developing strategy to accomplish the organization’s advocacy objectives. This role will also be responsible for developing and overseeing key internal and external messaging including member communications, policy position statements, website content and social media. An effective advocacy and communications program are key drivers of RECA’s membership and is integral to RECA’s overall mission.
Work with the VP of Policy and Government Affairs to organize and provide strategy on key advocacy projects
Work with CEO and other senior staff to craft compelling written content that engages membership and leads to measurable action including fact sheets, policy briefs, position statements and online/social media pieces related to policy issues
Lead RECA Advocates Program and use digital technology tools to develop processes to create direct action campaigns and mobilize members around issues
Develop content for signature RECA lunches and other events and organize speakers and RECA subject-matter experts around topics such as housing affordability, land use planning and policy, mobility and other issues.
Serve as lead writer for the organization for important leadership communications, scripts for special events and other projects as needed.
Manage development and distribution of all print and electronic communications including, but not limited to, e-marketing, advocacy alerts, annual summary, and RECA’s website.
Build and maintain relationships with members of the media.

At least three years of experience in an advocacy role or related government relations position
Highly organized, attention to detail and excellent proofreading and written communication skills
Self-directed and detail-oriented with a collaborative spirit to contribute to a collegial, team-oriented environment
Excels in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain professional demeanor under stress
Proven ability to own budgets, lead projects, and execute
Demonstrated ability to think creatively in a deadline-driven environment
Preferred Additional Experience
Experience working for a political campaign or in government
Experience in a communications role with an advocacy organization
Familiarity of state and local legislative organizations and processes, as well as policies and policymakers of interest and importance to the organization
Knowledge of the local commercial real estate or business industry
